Situated just moments from the A59 outside Clitheroe, the Calf's Head is a great place to stay and to eat. It's location offers quiet solitude together with quick access to the main route across the Penines, with Pendal Hill dominating the skyline. For our weekend stay we had booked into the annexe, our room taking up the first floor. It was cosy and spacious with plenty of storage. The steep steps make it unsuitable for some, but we managed. Breakfast in the conservatory offered a selection of traditional English as well as Continental. We enjoyed a lovely meal on the Friday evening in what is a busy and obviously very popular restaurant. I have to say that the staff were very attentive and friendly. When I asked about gulton free bread to go the pate I was immediately offered a separate menu with their gluten free options. I later noticed that they offered a number of different menus to other diners, depending our their preferences. It is the first time I have come across this level of service and I was very impressed. The food itself was excellent. Well prepared and presented. My steak was cooked perfectly, the blue cheese sauce an excellent accompaniment. The weather prevented us making use of the lovely garden area, but with it's waterside location and imposing view of Pendal Hill, it would, I am sure, be a perfect location to relax with friends on a sunny day. Whether you are looking for somewhere to stay or somewhere to eat and drink, the Calf's Head is a perfect place to stop. I would not hesitate to recommend it.
