Waggon and Horses

We booked for a night away to do the Christmas market etc. We arrived early and as the pub doesn't open whilst 3pm parked in the small carpark at the rear and walked the 10 minutes into York. Check-in was easy on our return, our room and bed was huge and comfortable though the ensuite was small with nowhere to put toiletries. There was good quality tea/coffee/biscuits and bottled water provided. The pub itself is a friendly local with very reasonable priced drinks but they didn't do evening meals. The breakfast was fantastic with plenty of choice and was fresh and hot, in fact it was so big it beat us! Now the reason for the lower rating unfortunately we didn't get much sleep at all. We were in room 4 at the front of the pub and the traffic noise was constant, also it was a windy night and the window was literally banging & rattling all night. I understand it's an old pub with old features and windows but it would really benefit from secondary glazing. Also the blackout curtains left a lot of gaps so there was a lot of light coming in from the pub light then general street lights. It's a shame as everything else was really good but it did spoil our stay.

We had a lovely stay here although shorter than planned. It is a very comfortable room and the beds were comfy. The breakfast was excellent and the owners very pleasant. The added bonus is the parking which near the city centre is great. Very comfortable

A really outstanding find. Great small pub atmosphere with top grade rooms above. I had room #6 which was spotless with a decent bathroom and shower, lots of clean towels and soap & shampoo etc. The room was a good size and the tea/coffee tray was well stocked. It was quiet and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with great choices and service. Great value for money with a small car park as well. I will stay again when I am up that way.

This was a great place to stay, Tom was friendly and helpful, the room was fantastic, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast was one of the best I’ve had! It’s close to the Barbican theatre and not too far from the historical sites. Parking on site as well, will be staying again.

Could have been sooo much better with a little tweak! The pub, rooms and breakfast is great. The young girl that sorted us out from start to finish was excellent. The accommodation locks up at 11pm so you get 3 keys - gate to back yard, entrance to pub, room. Unfortunately the entrance to the property is a yale lock and someone dropped the deadlock on the door before we got back. We knocked loudly but no-one could hear. There is a contact number for the owners when the pub is open which we rang lots of times and left messages, also text to say we were locked out but no answer or reply. If we had our car key with us we would have considered sleeping in the car but they were in our room. At the very least there should have been a sign on the door instructing residents NOT to put the deadlock on the door. We were in the yard for an hour and only got in due to waking a resident up at the front of the property who was not happy. When mentioned to the owner at breakfast next day there was no answer to why they don’t answer the phone and just a’sorry’ with a bottle of Prosecco. Apparently it has happened before but they have done nothing to rectify this. For this reason only we will never stay here again. You don’t pay for a room to stand in the car park stressing for a large chunk of the night!

As a family we booked three rooms here for 3 nights. We had a double, twin and a single room. The double and twin rooms were ok size wise, though we did see that there were bigger rooms during our stay. The single room was very compact. The two bigger rooms had a small wardrobe but not much else storage wise. There wasn't a wardrobe in the single room. They were all en suite Our room overlooked the car park and we weren't disturbed overnight by any noise. The staff were very nice. We had breakfast every morning which offered, cereals, toast, fresh juices, teas, coffees. The cooked breakfasts, which were cooked to order, were very good. There is a car park but with limited spaces. The outside beer garden is nice. Even though the room my brother had was small he said it was adequate for the weekend and thought it was value for money, when it included such a good breakfast in the price
