Hornsby House Inn

After a much anticipated stay at The Hornsby House Inn I decided to write a review of our stay. We spent two nights (July 3-5) at this extraordinary Inn. The hosts, Tom, Kat, & Lexi made our stay wonderful. We checked in to our Huge room, the Riverview Room, and it’s incredible view of the York River and the Yorktown Victory Monument. The Breakfast served each morning were fresh, hot and homemade. Yorktown is a dream location for anyone who is a fan of the American Revolution War era. We walked onto battlefields where General George Washington defeated General Lord Cornwallis and forced an end to the hostilities. The Hornsby House is a wonderful location to stay in Yorktown and it’s accommodations are beautiful combined with delicious food. We will be back.

My husband and I stayed in the Monument Room for three nights and had a lovely time! The room is very large, with a fireplace, access to the large balcony with lounge chairs for warm weather, a king and two single beds, and sitting area! The house was decorated for Christmas so particularly appealing with all the antiques already interesting to see. We had a self-check in and essentially felt like the house was our own as only a few rooms were occupied. We had a delivery of a delicious steak dinner from the only high level restaurant in Yorktown in front of the fire, with our bottle of wine and it was perfect. The three breakfasts were beyond fabulous with great coffee and company. David, one of the owners whose family has had the house for many years, gave us an amazing history of Yorktown, the Revolutionary War, and the house itself on our first day, which was far better and nuanced than what is offered at the American Revolution Museum. Tom was a great host and my husband was thrilled to play the lovely Steinway in preparation for a concert he is performing in March. Highly recommend!

Hornsby was a wonderful place to stay. Close to Yorktown Battlefield NP, Jamestown NP & Colonial Williamsburg. Stay there, and use it as a home base to see it all. The breakfast was delicious, and it feels like staying in a home. We will stay here again. Lovely to walk around the neighborhood too.

Tranquility! The Inn is beautiful, the staff are outstanding they go above and beyond. Best nights sleep in 8 months (the pillows are a dream). Elegance and charm! Stepping back in time. Thank you!!!!

Lovely 1930s grand house smack dab in the middle of historic Main St. I stayed in the ground floor carriage house right outside the main house. My room was well-appointed with a comfortable bed and sitting chairs. I had access to the house which is decorated much as it was when innkeeper David was growing up living in the house his grandfather built. Breakfast was complete, delicious, and served promptly at 8:45 during which David regaled us with stories of the house and a brief history of Yorktown. The behind the scenes work was done by the team of Tom, Kat, and Lexi all of whom were friendly and ran a tight ship. I was fortunate to be around for the Friday wine and cheese happy hour which was a nice touch. The grounds are vast with lots of seating both on the porch and throughout the yard, it didn’t hurt that I had gorgeous weather. Park your car and enjoy walking around the town. What a delightful place, I would definitely visit again.

Loved this Bed & Breakfast Inn, walking distance to pub and other places to eat. The inside was beautifully decorated and felt very safe. Best part was the wonderful breakfast we were served every morning and owner coming to breakfast one morning to give us the history of the house and other events in Yorktown. Highly recommend this place.

Just completed a 2 day business meeting using the Hornsby House as the main venue. The layout of the house enabled us to have breakouts that were conversational. It was refreshing and delightful to be in a quaint home. The staff is lovely. Breakfast was terrific. Rooms were great. Also tremendous flexibility in allowing us to bring in snacks and beverages.

We stayed one night in the carriage house which was comfortable, spacious and quiet. The owners are very personable and served a wonderful breakfast. This is the perfect location to wander around Yorktown. We would definitely stay again.

The Hornsby House experience is not to be missed. It is personal, welcoming, homey, informative, charming. It is not as convenient or efficient as a standard hotel, but you get so much in return! The cost is very reasonable for what you get. Here is a summary of the highs and lows, but before that an important tip. Important Tip: Stay at least two nights for two reasons: 1) so that you will hear history of Hornsby House and the Battle of Yorktown from David, the owner, and 2) to enjoy the Cocktail Hour by Tom, the day-to-day innkeeper. The talks seem to be every-other day; the cocktail hours are currently on Wednesdays and Fridays. Highs: It is a lot like living in your own home, with cheerful service available all day. Tom, now the inn keeper and sole maintenance person, is at the house all the time, from about 7am to 7pm. Always available, always welcoming and friendly, Tom makes the breakfasts, sets and clears the table, does the dishes, takes care of any special needs, makes drinks and snacks for semi-weekly cocktail hours, and basically does everything else too. David, the owner, stops by sometimes at breakfast to regale visitors with the history of the house (his grandfather JW Hornsby built in in 1930 with the architectural services of Rockefeller’s principal architects), his family, and the history of Yorktown and the battle thereof. The breakfasts, all home cooked from scratch, are excellent. Breakfasts for two of this quality in a hotel would cost $40-$50. Any special needs are accommodated (i.e. vegetarian, as one in our group is). The house is full of many original furnishings from the 1930’s. The gas fireplace is always ready to be lit by the push of a button, whenever wanted. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are always available self-serve, as is an honor bar with beer, wine, and spirits. All rooms seem to have refrigerators. The lows: There are few, but some might be significant for those who prefer the hotel experience. We are in general hotel-stayers. No elevator. Some of the rooms are on the third floor. Some of the bathrooms are tiny. None seem to have surfaces to set things down. There is little or no maid service normally, but you can get towels and such on your own, just like at home. The cleaning is spotty. A few cobwebs around, things like that. The teas are all herbal; the decaf is from Keurig.
