"This is a somewhat old Japanese-style hotel, not quite worthy of a 4-star rating. It seems there are only public baths, no private ones. They don't offer luggage storage for multiple days. They told me to use the coin locker at the station, but that only allows for 7 days, and it only accepts coins."

"This hotel is located far from the city, quite remote even by car. It's a traditional small hotel; you have to climb dozens of stairs from the road to the lobby, making it a bit of a hassle to carry luggage. The hotel staff are friendly. The hotel has separate hot springs for men and women, but both are very small. There is also a small open-air hot spring for both men and women. The hot spring water is of very high quality. The food, perhaps due to its local origin, is relatively ordinary."

"Stayed in this historic ryokan in an onsen town. Historic means the building is old with thin walls, but I found the guests were respectful and quiet. We had hiked for 3 hrs that day so I slept really well in the fluffy Japanese style beds. All meals were room service and very elaborate- no one will go hungry here! It was the best part of the stay. The Onsen attached to the ryokan needs work - at minimum the window that looks out to a public area needs to be fixed as it is uncomfortable to change in that room. I felt that I needed to hide myself in a corner to not be exposed to the outside. Our room had a toilet and sink; showers are attached to the Onsen room. It would be helpful to provide a list of instructions for the Onsen room /shower as I had no idea what I was doing and took multiple trips back to my room. Now that I have tried it I would wear my robe down to the Onsen room with whatever toiletries you need; change in the change room, take shower/use Onsen bath, change to your next outfit (pyjamas), dry hair etc and then return to room. Be aware that an Onsen in Japan is natural spring water in a natural setting - it’s not like a modern spa or a chlorinated pool. Slippery rocks and algae is common. There is a world heritage Onsen available outside the Ryokan but tickets are hard to come by- if you want to visit, stay for more than one day so you can get a ticket when it opens. We tried to get tickets mid-afternoon and were waived off so we ended up using the public Onsen. This one is modernized so the Onsen water is pumped in to a hot tub in a building that is new. You can also cook your own Onsen eggs - purchase at the restaurant across from the river and ask them for the timing for cooking. Overall, our stay was a fantastic cultural experience- you won’t regret it."
